00:00:08:08 – 00:00:10:02
Hi, my name is Mimi.

00:00:10:02 – 00:00:13:08
I am a rising junior, VMA major

00:00:13:21 – 00:00:16:21
and I am a part of the Emtern program
this summer in Boston.

00:00:20:05 – 00:00:22:27
Something that I was so excited about
when I started this internship,

00:00:22:27 – 00:00:25:27
and got into the program,
and I’m still so excited about

00:00:25:27 – 00:00:29:02
now being here, is just being able
to be in Boston over the summer.

00:00:29:02 – 00:00:32:21
It’s such a great city to be in, and such
a fun experience to be able to have.

00:00:32:24 – 00:00:35:29
And it also just means
that I was able to find an internship

00:00:35:29 – 00:00:39:04
without worrying about like location
or anything because there’s so much

00:00:39:15 – 00:00:42:15
to look at and find in Boston,
which is just been amazing.

00:00:46:14 – 00:00:48:26
Being on campus over
the summer has certainly been

00:00:48:26 – 00:00:51:01
an interesting experience,
to say the least.

00:00:51:01 – 00:00:52:19
I’ve never stayed on campus

00:00:52:19 – 00:00:55:08
when it’s not been the school year before,
so it’s like a little quieter.

00:00:55:08 – 00:00:57:03
But I do really like that.

00:00:57:03 – 00:01:02:13
And it’s also meant that I’ve been able
to find any internship that I wanted.

00:01:02:13 – 00:01:06:19
I didn’t need to worry about expenses
of living or anything

00:01:06:23 – 00:01:10:25
besides groceries,
so I really just needed to find anything.

00:01:10:25 – 00:01:15:18
I didn’t need to find something that paid
a certain amount or paid at all.

00:01:15:18 – 00:01:19:19
I could just find and pursue
something that I really liked and enjoyed

00:01:19:20 – 00:01:22:29
without worrying about costs,
which has just been amazing.

00:01:22:29 – 00:01:25:29
And it’s something that I didn’t think
I would have been able to do before.

00:01:30:04 – 00:01:33:19
My internship currently is taking place
with Arlington Community Media,

00:01:33:19 – 00:01:37:21
which is kind of a cable TV company like,
northwest of Boston.

00:01:37:21 – 00:01:40:28
I’m a General Production Intern there
and I’ve been getting involved

00:01:40:28 – 00:01:44:15
in loads of different areas of studio,
TV production and field work as well.

00:01:44:15 – 00:01:47:10
And it’s just it’s
been such an amazing opportunity.

00:01:51:12 – 00:01:53:07
Every day of my internship is different.

00:01:53:07 – 00:01:55:06
I don’t really have a daily routine.

00:01:55:06 – 00:01:59:14
Specifically, one day I could be editing
like all day and editing suite.

00:01:59:14 – 00:02:02:09
The next day
I could be directing in a control room

00:02:02:09 – 00:02:04:28
or driving a camera operating.

00:02:04:28 – 00:02:06:21
It really, really depends day to day.

00:02:06:21 – 00:02:12:25
It depends if there’s a TV show or
something going on in the studio that day.

00:02:12:28 – 00:02:14:25
But I love the flexibility of that.

00:02:14:25 – 00:02:16:10
I’ve been able to learn so many new skills

00:02:16:10 – 00:02:20:13
as a result and try so many things
that I didn’t think about before.

00:02:20:13 – 00:02:23:28
I’m always too nervous to try before,
and I love the fact that I’ve been given

00:02:23:28 – 00:02:25:03
that opportunity.

00:02:29:05 – 00:02:32:11
I’d say some skills
that I had to apply in this internship –

00:02:33:03 – 00:02:35:22
The first one that comes to mind
would definitely be teamwork.

00:02:35:22 – 00:02:38:14
Everything that I do at ACMI
(Arlington Community Media Inc.)

00:02:38:14 – 00:02:41:28
is related to teams
and working with other people.

00:02:41:28 – 00:02:46:04
There’s so many other interns and every
project that I do is with another intern.

00:02:46:16 – 00:02:48:27
So we could be going out together
and shooting something.

00:02:48:27 – 00:02:51:03
But then we also come back
and we edit it together.

00:02:51:03 – 00:02:53:24
We show it to our supervisor together.

00:02:53:24 – 00:02:57:24
It’s something you have to be
enjoying teamwork to do it, but I love it

00:02:57:24 – 00:03:01:22
and it’s allowed me to kind of enhance
my people skills as well, which is great.

00:03:06:09 – 00:03:11:03
Looking back, if there’s one thing that
I wish I had known before this internship,

00:03:11:12 – 00:03:15:02
it’s a hard question, because I feel like
everything that I didn’t know,

00:03:15:02 – 00:03:15:28
I have learned.

00:03:15:29 – 00:03:18:12
I don’t feel like
I lacked anything coming into it

00:03:18:12 – 00:03:23:05
because it’s just been such
an inclusive environment working in ACMI, and

00:03:23:28 – 00:03:24:21
overall, I’ve just

00:03:24:21 – 00:03:27:16
I didn’t ever feel ill equipped
even when I was ill equipped.

00:03:27:16 – 00:03:31:22
Everyone’s been so welcoming and kind
and I couldn’t have asked

00:03:31:22 – 00:03:33:20
for a better internship opportunity.

00:03:37:21 – 00:03:40:26
In terms of key skills or abilities

00:03:40:26 – 00:03:44:07
that I think would be important
in my career field.

00:03:45:10 – 00:03:46:28
I would have to say networking.

00:03:46:28 – 00:03:50:11
I hate to say networking,
but I think it is something that’s really,

00:03:50:11 – 00:03:54:23
really valuable as a VMA major,
and in filmmaking in general.

00:03:56:13 – 00:04:00:10
Knowing how to network, of course, is
an invaluable skill, regardless

00:04:00:10 – 00:04:04:10
whether you’re a VMA major or BCE,
Creative Writing, anything, it doesn’t matter.

00:04:04:10 – 00:04:05:14
It’s important.

00:04:05:14 – 00:04:07:02
But specifically in film,

00:04:07:19 – 00:04:09:19
Everyone always like,
Oh, it’s who you know,

00:04:09:19 – 00:04:13:10
and it is to an extent, which sucks,
but it is the way it is.

00:04:13:10 – 00:04:17:16
But with Emtern, I’ve definitely been given
the opportunity to network.

00:04:17:16 – 00:04:19:23
Before the program
officially started this summer,

00:04:19:23 – 00:04:23:09
we had one-on-one networking prep work,
which was really great.

00:04:23:10 – 00:04:25:25
We would sit down with someone
at the Career Development Center

00:04:25:25 – 00:04:27:15
and we would get to

00:04:27:15 – 00:04:31:09
set up an Emerge account and be given
like some networking advice.

00:04:31:19 – 00:04:35:16
And then all the skills I learned in
that session have been reinforced

00:04:35:16 – 00:04:39:09
every single week in our Emtern meetings
because we get to meet

00:04:39:09 – 00:04:42:16
and communicate
with successful Emerson alumni.

00:04:43:00 – 00:04:46:11
And so I’m constantly reinforcing
those skills with Emtern.

00:04:50:27 – 00:04:53:05
Why do they apply to the Emtern program?

00:04:53:05 – 00:04:54:20
That’s a very fun question.

00:04:54:20 – 00:04:57:23
So I actually I didn’t know
about the program until last October

00:04:57:23 – 00:04:59:22
when a friend told me about it
because I was expressing

00:04:59:22 – 00:05:02:09
that I was worried
about finding an internship for the summer.

00:05:02:09 – 00:05:05:07
As an international student,
coming from a place with very little film

00:05:05:07 – 00:05:07:15
industry,
I was so worried about, of being able

00:05:07:15 – 00:05:09:13
to find an internship
outside the school year

00:05:09:13 – 00:05:11:29
when I’d be really busy, but
Emtern made it possible

00:05:11:29 – 00:05:15:26
for me to stay in a place that I love,
where there’s plenty of opportunity,

00:05:15:26 – 00:05:18:26
and I’m so grateful that I was able
to be admission to the program.

00:05:19:03 – 00:05:22:03
And also to be able
to complete my internship as I have.

00:05:22:08 – 00:05:24:23
If anything, it’s made me feel a lot
better about my ability

00:05:24:23 – 00:05:29:10
to succeed within the film industry,
because I feel like I’m equipped now

00:05:29:26 – 00:05:32:10
to really do everything and pursue
what I want to pursue.

00:05:32:10 – 00:05:36:24
Whereas before I felt maybe that
I didn’t have all the skills I needed.

00:05:36:24 – 00:05:41:18
But having this opportunity,
it’s just, it’s been such a great time.

00:05:41:18 – 00:05:44:05
And I’m sad to finish my internship.

00:05:44:05 – 00:05:46:28
I’ve had a wonderful time
with Emtern and at ACMI
