Sportsmen’s Tennis and Enrichment Center has made an incredible impact on the Greater Boston Area. We recently spoke with them about their impact and opportunities this past Spring and we’re now lucky enough to connect with a current #Emtern at the organization through a community development experience.

How did you find your internship?
While exploring Handshake for internships this summer, I was thrilled to discover Sportsmen’s Tennis and Enrichment Center.
How long is your internship?
I started at the beginning of June and it runs through the end of August.
Where is your internship taking place? All Virtual? Hybrid?
I drive into Dorchester to film in person, but I work from home to do post-production.
How do you feel about it?
I love it! As a tennis player I couldn’t be more excited about my two passions intertwining on the court.
What does your daily routine look like?
Once I arrive at Sportsmen’s, I check in with Mary, the Director of Development. For each project, Mary and I work together to make a plan of action. Then, I’ll set up my equipment and hit the courts to film. Some projects require interviews, so I’ll use the classrooms for that footage. After I grab enough material, I’ll spend quite some time watching and labeling the videos from home. The editing process can take up to two weeks depending on the type of video. When I’m not at Sportsman’s, Mary and I stay in contact, so I can share drafts of the videos.
What are some of your favorite parts of your internship?
I love the atmosphere at Sportsmen’s; naturally, filming the lessons and clinics are my favorite parts!
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on some promotional videos for their summer camp and tennis clinics. We are also in the process of planning a new project to thank the New Commonwealth Fund for the gift they gave to Sportmen’s.
What is something you wish you learned before taking your internship?
I wish I knew more about conducting interviews; however, I’m grateful for using this as a learning opportunity!
What are some essential skills/abilities/knowledge someone in your field should have?
Digital organization! It’s so important to familiarize yourself with the content in each video, and label them appropriately. You definitely need to be comfortable with your camera and editing. Being flexible and having good communication is essential to the execution of each project. Since I’ve played tennis nearly my whole life, I was equipped with the knowledge needed to work as a videographer on the court. Knowing the appropriate camera angles to compliment the players strokes and footwork, allowed me to seamlessly track their movement. If you’re filming a sport, watching it or even playing it yourself is helpful!
Why did you decide to take this internship?
This internship was the perfect opportunity for me this summer! I knew that working as a video production intern would allow me to strengthen my skills as a videographer.
