Advocacy Updates

Film & Television Tax Incentive
We are very pleased to report that through debate of the state budget for FY2019 there were no negative proposals to alter the incentive program by the Governor, House, or Senate versions of their budgets.
Persistent advocacy pays off. We continue to lobby diligently to build support and protect the state’s Film & Television Tax Incentive program. There are a significant number of new legislators in both legislative branches and we are working very hard to engage them and educate as many as possible. Our recent advocacy actions include:

  • A very successful briefing at the State House produced for legislators and their staff in June about the large and growing footprint the industry is establishing across the state. Read below for positive press from the session.WGBH: Tax breaks for Massachusetts Movies seems here to stay

Commonwealth Magazine: Netflix, Showtime to film series in Mass

  • We’ve organized 10 in-district meetings with state Senators to meet and connect first-hand with local businesses, creative companies, workers, and higher education representatives from their districts to learn about the breadth of the industry and specific impact from their constituents.
  • We have provided candidates for open seats in the legislature with information about the industry and incentive program as they contemplate their priorities in seeking election.
  • We continue to produce regular print and digital informational campaigns in the state house. Further educating legislators on industry impact and news on a regular basis about growth areas and specific productions.

Programs & Community

  • We produced two great MPC Member Meetings to bring the community together with local showcases in feature production and post topics.
  • We also held two special events:
Women Connect bringing over 100 industry women to hear and share stories about their careers, challenges, and accomplishments. Our hope is this event becomes a regular happening and bridges the dialogue with access and mentorship for women in the field.
Storytelling for Technology also generated a packed house for a special talk and showcase with agencies, creative producers, and technologists; bringing together members from content, media production, and tech communities.
  • We’ve also made great progress in our education initiatives to support the future of our industry through a very successful sold-out PA Workshop and partnering with IFFBoston for the Student Film Showcase. Our Higher Education Consortium continues to make great strides and look forward to sharing more developments on this soon.
Watch for announcements soon for a terrific lineup of fall programs, Mass Media Expo 2018, and new initiatives on the way.
We’re excited to continue working together to build a bright future with you!
