00:00:00:06 – 00:00:03:14
Hi, my name is Colette Lauture,
and I am a junior journalism
00:00:03:14 – 00:00:06:14
major with a minor in narrative nonfiction here at Emerson.
00:00:06:20 – 00:00:11:13
And last summer, I worked with GBH as a GBH news intern
00:00:11:13 – 00:00:15:03
under the umbrella of the radio
and editorial slash
00:00:15:03 – 00:00:16:15
investigative team.
00:00:28:21 – 00:00:32:20
I found this internship
through a LinkedIn job posting.
00:00:32:23 – 00:00:36:05
When I read the job description,
it seemed like it really catered to
00:00:36:05 – 00:00:40:08
my needs as a journalist and just
what kind of journalistic activities
00:00:40:08 – 00:00:41:14
I wanted to take a part of.
00:00:41:14 – 00:00:46:11
It was a lot of reporting, research.
It checked off a lot of boxes in terms
00:00:46:11 – 00:00:50:02
of what I wanted to do with my summer as a journalism intern somewhere.
00:00:53:06 – 00:00:57:02
The Future Ready Career Course really helped me in that
00:00:57:02 – 00:01:01:15
it gave me more of a confidence booster in terms of my resume
00:01:01:19 – 00:01:03:29
and kind of the skills that I could already bring to the table.
00:01:03:29 – 00:01:07:22
It gave me a lot more confidence
in going into the interview process,
00:01:07:22 – 00:01:11:23
what to expect, how to answer specific questions using the STAR method,
00:01:11:25 – 00:01:13:06
So I think just getting
00:01:13:06 – 00:01:17:00
the proper resources from that Future Ready course in terms of interviewing,
00:01:17:02 – 00:01:20:14
how to polish up my resumé, how to email
00:01:20:14 – 00:01:22:14
a recruiter saying thank you
after an interview.
00:01:22:14 – 00:01:24:15
I think those were all just really helpful
00:01:24:15 – 00:01:27:23
things that the course taught me
that led me to landing this internship.
00:01:31:08 – 00:01:32:22
Honestly, it was a bunch of things.
00:01:32:22 – 00:01:36:23
I think getting to meet all of the other fellow interns is really nice.
00:01:36:23 – 00:01:41:26
We had a bunch of group-wide intern activities that we would take part in together.
00:01:41:26 – 00:01:43:12
Sometimes we would have guest speakers
00:01:43:12 – 00:01:46:21
come in from the GBH company
to talk to us about their jobs,
00:01:46:23 – 00:01:50:02
and I also really appreciated the projects that I was able to work on.
00:01:50:05 – 00:01:53:26
GBH News, they put out a whole deliverable on the slave history
00:01:53:26 – 00:01:55:27
behind Boston’s Freedom Trail
00:01:55:27 – 00:02:00:09
that’s not really discussed on tours
that people go on for the trail.
00:02:00:11 – 00:02:04:18
So I was able to write two articles on two of the sites on the Freedom Trail,
00:02:04:18 – 00:02:06:02
and that’s published on their website.
00:02:06:02 – 00:02:10:13
So it was just really nice to have
my byline on their website permanently.
00:02:10:13 – 00:02:15:12
I think I’m just really proud
that I was able to contribute to that kind of a project.
00:02:18:17 – 00:02:22:02
Advice I have for other Emerson students who may be starting their internships
00:02:22:03 – 00:02:25:25
soon is to just honestly make
the most of it.
00:02:25:28 – 00:02:29:02
Really get to know the people you work with and not even just
00:02:29:02 – 00:02:33:23
your fellow interns, but also your bosses and maybe colleagues of your bosses….
00:02:33:23 – 00:02:35:22
All it takes is that one connection that you have with
00:02:35:22 – 00:02:39:09
someone that could open the door
for you in numerous ways maybe.
00:02:39:09 – 00:02:40:04
You never know,
00:02:40:04 – 00:02:41:10
those connections
00:02:41:10 – 00:02:45:28
can be secret weapons in your arsenal when you are navigating the job world.
