00:00:00:00 – 00:00:05:07
Hi y’all! My name is Camryn Ciancia
and I am a senior WLP major
00:00:05:07 – 00:00:09:41
with a concentration in publishing
and I’m graduating in December.
00:00:09:46 – 00:00:12:46
This past summer I interned at Charlesbridge Publishing
00:00:12:52 – 00:00:15:17
as their children’s design intern.
00:00:24:46 – 00:00:26:25
After lots of searching,
00:00:26:25 – 00:00:30:25
I found my internship with Charlesbridge through their website.
00:00:30:30 – 00:00:31:33
I started going through
00:00:31:33 – 00:00:35:36
different publishers’ websites
directly, and that’s where
I saw the listing.
00:00:35:40 – 00:00:37:32
And I decided on this internship
because I thought
00:00:37:32 – 00:00:42:02
it’d be really great opportunity
for me to develop my design skills
00:00:42:02 – 00:00:45:02
a little bit further and kind of see
a different side of publishing
00:00:45:02 – 00:00:47:48
that I wasn’t so sure of at that point.
00:00:50:50 – 00:00:53:39
There were some days where I was doing a lot of Photoshop work.
00:00:53:39 – 00:00:55:18
There are other days when
I was searching
00:00:55:18 – 00:00:59:13
for new illustrators
to work on newly acquired books.
00:00:59:18 – 00:01:02:14
Some days I was helping
to do proof edits.
00:01:02:14 – 00:01:03:53
It really just depended on what
00:01:03:53 – 00:01:07:36
the other design and art team
members needed done that day.
00:01:07:41 – 00:01:11:49
So I got to try out a bunch of different things, which was super fun and exciting for me.
00:01:14:22 – 00:01:16:31
My favorite part of my
internship was getting
00:01:16:31 – 00:01:20:33
to see the process of how these
books got made from
the more art side.
00:01:20:34 – 00:01:23:34
Especially working with children’s books, that’s so important.
00:01:23:40 – 00:01:27:50
I saw from the minute
that we acquired an illustrator
00:01:27:55 – 00:01:31:44
to seeing the first sketches, to
then seeing some of the final paints.
00:01:31:48 – 00:01:34:30
And I was really happy that I got to work on some of those books.
00:01:38:18 – 00:01:40:34
Something that I really love
about publishing,
00:01:40:34 – 00:01:43:34
especially for young people
looking to go into the industry,
00:01:43:49 – 00:01:47:18
is that you can enter it
from many different skill sets.
00:01:47:23 – 00:01:51:59
For example, I already had
some experience in the editorial
and marketing side
00:01:52:04 – 00:01:55:49
and I had some design experience,
so I wanted to develop that further.
00:01:55:54 – 00:01:58:54
Hence why I took a design internship.
00:01:58:58 – 00:02:01:40
But of course,
if you want to go into design,
00:02:01:40 – 00:02:04:56
it’s important to be knowledgeable
in pretty much the whole Adobe
00:02:04:56 – 00:02:08:59
Suite from Photoshop and Illustrator
to especially InDesign,
00:02:09:04 – 00:02:13:02
and just kind of having a
good, sound knowledge of
different design terms.
00:02:13:07 – 00:02:17:26
But also the beauty of interning
is that you get to develop
these skills further
00:02:17:41 – 00:02:20:44
and there are a bunch of people there to help you along the way.
00:02:23:52 – 00:02:26:28
The best advice I could give for someone about to start
00:02:26:28 – 00:02:29:57
an internship is to not be afraid
to ask questions.
00:02:30:02 – 00:02:34:11
It’s better to learn and ask
questions than to try something
and do it wrong.
00:02:34:16 – 00:02:35:46
These people are here to help you.
00:02:35:46 – 00:02:37:48
You’re not a burden to them.
They hired you.
00:02:37:48 – 00:02:39:23
You’re worthy to be there.
00:02:39:23 – 00:02:42:07
And you should just try to make the
most out of your experience.
