00:00:03:48 – 00:00:07:48
Hi, I’m
Maria Servellon, and I am an Emerson
00:00:07:52 – 00:00:11:22
College MFA alumna of 2018
00:00:11:26 – 00:00:14:53
and I am also an affiliate faculty member
00:00:15:02 – 00:00:20:36
in the Visual Media Arts Department.
00:00:20:40 – 00:00:21:06
What sparked
00:00:21:06 – 00:00:24:49
my interest in multimedia
was grabbing a camera
00:00:24:54 – 00:00:30:13
on my 15th birthday, my quinceañera,
and exploring.
00:00:30:27 – 00:00:32:13
My dad gave me this camera.
00:00:32:13 – 00:00:36:42
He was like “I don’t know come back
when you find something
00:00:36:47 – 00:00:41:33
interesting” and that’s something
that was very daunting.
00:00:41:38 – 00:00:43:49
But I was very excited.
00:00:43:49 – 00:00:48:03
And with time,
I started making music videos
00:00:48:03 – 00:00:53:29
with my friends, in classes,
and making experimental works.
00:00:53:30 – 00:00:58:00
When I came to Emerson College,
I was like, okay, I know what I want to do.
00:00:58:17 – 00:01:02:53
But now I’ll officially write it, direct it
produce it, get the casting, everything done.
00:01:03:02 – 00:01:07:30
Also, see what else is out there
when it comes to multimedia work.
00:01:12:29 – 00:01:14:03
Being at Emerson
00:01:14:03 – 00:01:18:28
was something that I really treasure
because
00:01:18:32 – 00:01:23:53
I was able to learn a lot in class,
but mostly as well on the film
00:01:23:53 – 00:01:28:21
sets with my peers
and on their emerging media projects
00:01:28:21 – 00:01:31:04
and thinking about,
like, what are different ways
00:01:31:04 – 00:01:34:48
you can tell stories
and can influence culture.
00:01:34:53 – 00:01:37:45
My favorite Emerson professors
00:01:37:45 – 00:01:41:25
were able to help me
think about how to approach
00:01:41:38 – 00:01:46:03
directing in a way
that is authentic and vulnerable,
00:01:46:15 – 00:01:50:11
working with actors,
and then also how to teach
00:01:50:16 – 00:01:53:01
well in my classes and care
00:01:53:01 – 00:01:56:23
about what I am talking about.
00:01:56:23 – 00:02:00:18
Being able to not have to pick
one form of media or the other.
00:02:00:18 – 00:02:04:43
So if I wanted to do video art, good.
If I wanted to do filmmaking,
00:02:04:45 – 00:02:10:11
they can both exist in the world and you
don’t have to compromise your visions.
00:02:10:15 – 00:02:15:36
And having that was really useful for me
because even though I came in
00:02:15:45 – 00:02:21:52
with clear direction, I left definitely
in a sense of achievement
00:02:21:59 – 00:02:25:47
and personal satisfaction
that the world felt
00:02:25:55 – 00:02:30:57
pretty open and interesting
now that, you know, Emerson days are over.
00:02:35:56 – 00:02:39:07
What I love about teaching at Emerson
and I’ve taught
00:02:39:11 – 00:02:42:40
narrative classes and directing, ways
of seeing,
00:02:42:44 – 00:02:47:00
the feminist media production
course is that the students inspire me.
00:02:47:01 – 00:02:52:39
I love to see excitement and passion,
having a lot of fun conversations
00:02:52:39 – 00:02:57:50
in class about interesting works
that we’ve seen and experiences on sets,
00:02:57:52 – 00:03:02:06
and being able to get together
and get excited
00:03:02:06 – 00:03:05:07
for the craft
and want to learn more and more and more.
00:03:05:15 – 00:03:10:51
I think that approaching
teaching at Emerson and coming back
00:03:10:51 – 00:03:15:00
four years ago was something
that helped me in my own craft
00:03:15:05 – 00:03:21:05
where I thought about how do I help others
the way that I was helped.
00:03:21:10 – 00:03:23:05
How can I bring that back?
00:03:23:05 – 00:03:28:31
And to be part of the Emerson community
that, again, is always paying it forward.
00:03:33:30 – 00:03:36:32
I had different achievements, like, from
00:03:36:41 – 00:03:42:47
El Mundo Boston and Mass MOCA, Mayor’s
Office, Boston Public Schools.
00:03:42:47 – 00:03:46:19
They’re awesome and I’m very proud of them
and I worked really hard to get them.
00:03:46:19 – 00:03:47:47
But they’re not
00:03:47:47 – 00:03:52:28
the only thing that I feel like makes me
an artist, makes me who I am as a person.
00:03:52:42 – 00:03:58:14
I think that it’s the types of connections
I’ve been able to make.
00:03:58:18 – 00:04:01:22
The relatability and authenticity
that I’ve been able
00:04:01:22 – 00:04:04:57
to build over time and passion
for the craft,
00:04:04:58 – 00:04:07:58
I would say. It’s never about,
00:04:08:10 – 00:04:11:32
you know, how many awards
and such that I can get.
00:04:11:34 – 00:04:16:38
It’s more so of, did I come in this space
00:04:16:38 – 00:04:20:40
as authentically as I could,
and I can say that, yeah, I have.
00:04:20:40 – 00:04:23:36
And that’s probably my most
00:04:23:40 – 00:04:25:33
important achievement.
00:04:30:32 – 00:04:31:44
So from the different things
00:04:31:44 – 00:04:34:44
that I have worked on over a decade now,
00:04:34:57 – 00:04:40:31
I think that I want to keep working
in the next couple of years
00:04:40:31 – 00:04:45:11
with even more musicians,
performing artists, written word artists,
00:04:45:16 – 00:04:49:17
and to think about outside of my city,
00:04:49:31 – 00:04:52:31
like who else needs to hear this message
00:04:52:40 – 00:04:56:36
of how the arts matter and
00:04:56:41 – 00:05:00:52
appearing as authentically as possible
through your work.
00:05:00:56 – 00:05:04:11
So I try not to have like concrete goals
00:05:04:11 – 00:05:08:23
because I’m definitely a believer
that in the place with the right time,
00:05:08:28 – 00:05:13:50
everything just kind of falls into place
and that’s how it’s always been for me.
00:05:13:55 – 00:05:16:43
It’s a lot of patience,
but I think that it’s worth it.
00:05:16:43 – 00:05:21:11
Best advice for folks is work
hard, work steady, rest hard,
00:05:21:16 – 00:05:24:16
and also you’ll see the little bud
00:05:24:30 – 00:05:25:22
growing
00:05:25:22 – 00:05:30:06
Thank you again for letting me share
my pearls of wisdom
00:05:30:06 – 00:05:32:48
with you on and off the classroom.
00:05:32:48 – 00:05:38:02
And I hope that you have an amazing
semester. Take good care. Bye
