this summer in Boston.

Something that I was so excited about
when I started this internship,

and got into the program,
and I’m still so excited about

now being here, is just being able
to be in Boston over the summer.

It’s such a great city to be in, and such
a fun experience to be able to have.

And it also just means
that I was able to find an internship

without worrying about like location
or anything because there’s so much

to look at and find in Boston,
which is just been amazing.

Being on campus over
the summer has certainly been

an interesting experience,
to say the least.

I’ve never stayed on campus

when it’s not been the school year before,
so it’s like a little quieter.

But I do really like that.

And it’s also meant that I’ve been able
to find any internship that I wanted.

I didn’t need to worry about expenses
of living or anything

besides groceries,
so I really just needed to find anything.

I didn’t need to find something that paid
a certain amount or paid at all.

I could just find and pursue
something that I really liked and enjoyed

without worrying about costs,
which has just been amazing.

And it’s something that I didn’t think
I would have been able to do before.

My internship currently is taking place
with Arlington Community Media,

which is kind of a cable TV company like,
northwest of Boston.

I’m a General Production Intern there
and I’ve been getting involved

in loads of different areas of studio,
TV production and field work as well.

And it’s just it’s
been such an amazing opportunity.

Every day of my internship is different.

I don’t really have a daily routine.

Specifically, one day I could be editing
like all day and editing suite.

The next day
I could be directing in a control room

or driving a camera operating.

It really, really depends day to day.

It depends if there’s a TV show or
something going on in the studio that day.

But I love the flexibility of that.

I’ve been able to learn so many new skills

as a result and try so many things
that I didn’t think about before.

I’m always too nervous to try before,
and I love the fact that I’ve been given

that opportunity.

I’d say some skills
that I had to apply in this internship –

The first one that comes to mind
would definitely be teamwork.

Everything that I do at ACMI
(Arlington Community Media Inc.)

is related to teams
and working with other people.

There’s so many other interns and every
project that I do is with another intern.

So we could be going out together
and shooting something.

But then we also come back
and we edit it together.

We show it to our supervisor together.

It’s something you have to be
enjoying teamwork to do it, but I love it

and it’s allowed me to kind of enhance
my people skills as well, which is great.

Looking back, if there’s one thing that
I wish I had known before this internship,

it’s a hard question, because I feel like
everything that I didn’t know,

I have learned.

I don’t feel like
I lacked anything coming into it

because it’s just been such
an inclusive environment working in ACMI, and

overall, I’ve just

I didn’t ever feel ill equipped
even when I was ill equipped.

Everyone’s been so welcoming and kind
and I couldn’t have asked

for a better internship opportunity.

In terms of key skills or abilities

that I think would be important
in my career field.

I would have to say networking.

I hate to say networking,
but I think it is something that’s really,

really valuable as a VMA major,
and in filmmaking in general.

Knowing how to network, of course, is
an invaluable skill, regardless

whether you’re a VMA major or BCE,
Creative Writing, anything, it doesn’t matter.

It’s important.

But specifically in film,

Everyone always like,
Oh, it’s who you know,

and it is to an extent, which sucks,
but it is the way it is.

But with Emtern, I’ve definitely been given
the opportunity to network.

Before the program
officially started this summer,

we had one-on-one networking prep work,
which was really great.

We would sit down with someone
at the Career Development Center

and we would get to

set up an Emerge account and be given
like some networking advice.

And then all the skills I learned in
that session have been reinforced

every single week in our Emtern meetings
because we get to meet

and communicate
with successful Emerson alumni.

And so I’m constantly reinforcing
those skills with Emtern.

Why do they apply to the Emtern program?

So I actually I didn’t know
about the program until last October

when a friend told me about it
because I was expressing

that I was worried
about finding an internship for the summer.

As an international student,
coming from a place with very little film

industry,
I was so worried about, of being able
00:05:07:15 – 00:05:09:13
to find an internship
outside the school year
00:05:09:13 – 00:05:11:29
when I’d be really busy, but
Emtern made it possible
00:05:11:29 – 00:05:15:26
for me to stay in a place that I love,
where there’s plenty of opportunity,

and I’m so grateful that I was able
to be admission to the program.

And also to be able
to complete my internship as I have.

If anything, it’s made me feel a lot
better about my ability

to succeed within the film industry,
because I feel like I’m equipped now

to really do everything and pursue
what I want to pursue.

Whereas before I felt maybe that
I didn’t have all the skills I needed.

But having this opportunity,
it’s just, it’s been such a great time.
