The Boston Globe’s Assistant Managing Editor, Paula Bouknight, recently visited the Career Development Center to share information about the competitive Co-Op Program the Globe is currently recruiting for (that being their Summer/Fall Co-Op which runs from July to December). Before going further, it’s helpful to note that the Co-Op’s application deadline is March 1st.
For those unaware of what a co-op is, these are similar to internships in that they’re short-term work assignments but they’re different in terms of their benefits and requirements. A co-op is a traditionally full-time, paid position that operates on a more intensive timeline than other internships. The Globe’s co-op fits this description to a tee — including the piece about a more intensive timeline.
As I mentioned before, the Globe’s current co-op runs from July to December, while the one they recruit in the Fall runs from January to June. Either opportunity requires you to consider some changes to your class schedule which may impact your date of graduation. But there are other options to consider — which I’ll expand on in just one second.

To pursue the co-op, you will have to coordinate the position with your current class schedule and upcoming semester. Students often take one of the following routes when working the co-op…
- Take a leave of absence from Emerson College for the Spring 2019 semester. This is not the most convenient route for some students but it is one of the simplest solutions. A leave of absence will extend your academic career for an additional semester but will allow you to work full-time. Please note that on-campus housing is not offered to those who take a leave of absence
- Some students remain a full-time student. Here’s how: Earn academic credit for the internship during the Spring 2019 semester (ie: semester will consist of 12 -16 credits, 8 of which will be for the 499 internship class, the remaining 4-8 would be through classes that fit around your co-op schedule). The co-op program is meant to be full-time and not all co-op placements work with class schedules/commitments. If you are considering this option please consult Academic Advising to ensure this plan aligns with your graduation plan.
- Remain a part-time student: Earn academic credit for the internship during the Spring 2019 semester (ie: semester will consist of 8 credits which will be through the 499 internship class). If you are considering this option please consult Academic Advising to ensure this plan aligns with your graduation plan, as well as Financial Aid as you would be switching from full-time to part-time status.
